Triclosan is a synthetic pesticide found in most hand sanitizers and is used for its’ antibacterial properties. However, it is NOT effective in killing the flu virus. Although the FDA banned it from being used in antibacterial soaps, it is still allowed in other bar soaps, detergents, liquid hand soaps, deodorants, toothpastes AND hand sanitizer.
Triclosan has been associated with hormone disruption, cancer, liver damage and the development of super-germs, abnormal endocrine system/thyroid hormone signaling, weakening of the immune system. When children are exposed to antibacterial products, they have a greater chance of developing allergies, asthma and eczema. Constant use can contribute to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent also found in soap, shampoo, moisturizers and over 80% of all toothpastes on the market. It causes skin, lung and eye irritation to organ toxicity, endocrine disruption and cancer.
Parabens are preservatives and anti-microbial that are commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, food AND hand sanitizer. Their purpose is to stop fungus and bacteria from growing in liquid soaps, lotions, creams and hand sanitizer. Parabens cause cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxin and skin irritation. To avoid them, avoid ingredients ending in -paraben.
Ethyl alcohol (a.k.a. ethanol) is another common ingredient found in hand sanitizer. It is basically grain alcohol which is why teenagers have been drinking it. Unfortunately, worse than that little children tend to put their fingers in their mouth and there have been cases of alcohol poisoning as a result. Although the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration recommends a concentration of 60% to 95% ethanol or isopropanol for alcohol-based hand sanitizers. You have to take what the FDA recommends with a grain of salt, as half the people employed there, get their paycheck from pharmaceutical companies.
